This week is our first foray into the world of our novel Animal Farm.
Monday: Discuss grammar packet (adjective clauses and parallel construction; see me for copies); begin coverage of Animal Farm's allegory through THIS SLIDESHOW. Tuesday: Read Animal Farm Chapter 1 and complete STUDY GUIDE. Wednesday: Discuss Chapter 1; make connections to allegory (review slideshow). Read Chapter 2 and begin STUDY GUIDE. Thursday: Finish Chapter 2 and study guide; begin reading chapters 3-4. Discuss Chapter 2 allegorical connections. Friday: Complete Chapter 3 STUDY GUIDE and Chapter 4 STUDY GUIDE. Make further allegorical connections. Next week, we will weave in grammar and writing skills work along with progressing with Animal Farm. On Thursday, there will be a quiz over the first three chapters. (The following week, we will quiz over Chapters 4-6.) On Friday, we will not have school due to Parent Teacher Conferences. Where to find Animal Farm from home (since we have class sets of the text only): This is a bit of a chaotic week with many interruptions. The schedule is as follows:
Monday--All hours began the First Quarter assessment. Tuesday--All hours took school pictures. 1st and 2nd hour continued work on the assessment. 5th-7th hour had a guest teacher, as I was at a training. Their assignment was: Read the story on page 58 (Study Sync book), and respond to Think Question #2, and Close Read/Focus Questions 1, 3, and 5. Wednesday--1st-5th hour took the PSAT and did not attend class. 6th and 7th hour had the option to work on their assessment and finish yesterday's work. Thursday--All hours will have a guest teacher as I will be finishing my training. They will have a grammar packet to work on along with reading the selection on page 64, and responding to Think Questions 1-3, and Close Read/Focus Question 2. Friday--All hours will finish the assessment and any missing work. If possible, we will begin making connections between Thursday's reading and Animal Farm, which we will pick up from the book room on Monday. Please follow the order of slides and designated assignments on the slideshow attached to Monday's presentation. Tuesday's work is whole class work, and nothing needed to be turned in. Wednesday's work is individual and will need to be turned in by Thursday.

Today, students finished and turned in Think Questions 1-5 from page 36, citing and providing evidence for each question. Next, we completed a summary activity over "The Joy Luck Club" excerpt. The activity is in the slideshow; the answer choices are as follows: A. power to control his or her life; B. "my mother's disappointed face, something inside me began to die"; C. what the mother has lost; D. "I" and "my"; E. adult; F. changed; G. "was beginning to give up hope" If time allows, we will begin looking at the characterization video on Study Sync and complete the associated activity. Tomorrow, we will finish with "The Joy Luck Club," and we will move on to read "Only Daughter." Monday: 1) Review literary terms notes for assessment tomorrow. Add in "foreshadowing" and "repetition" as needed. 2) Work on narrative (due Wednesday). 3) Read "The Joy Luck Club" excerpt in Study Sync book starting on page 32.
Tuesday: 1) Take assessment. 2) Continue narrative work. 3) Work on "Think" questions for the new story. Wednesday: 1) Finish and turn in narrative essays. 2) Complete "Think" questions for the new story. 3) Receive graded items (multiple) with feedback. Have a great Fall Break! Students finished and turned in last week's packets on Monday, and then read the next selection in our books. After all were ready, we began work with Tone. Tuesday we will finish discussing Tone and address Theme in the newest selection. In all hours we did not get past the "Theme" slide; Wednesday we will all begin group work with additional literary terms. We will also discuss Theme in greater depth on Wednesday. Thursday we will discuss examples of all of those literary terms and turn in Wednesday's group work. We will also review vocabulary and review for Friday's quiz. After the quiz on Friday, students will work on their narrative essays. A handout will be attached HERE soon with directions, and students will receive that in-class upon turning in their quizzes. The Narrative Essay will not be due until Wednesday, 10-5. Quiz is Friday (plot-based recap. of I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings); Assessment is next Tuesday (skills-based identification and application of literary terms; notes may be used). Thursday and Friday students will have a guest teacher. The work for both days will be in a packet. If students are absent both days, simply pick up the packet upon return.
