Today, we will review for Tuesday's poetry exam (weight=test; size=quiz). The PowerPoint below is what we will review in class. We will also complete the vocabulary pre-test attached below with no aids if time allows. If we don't do it Friday, we will certainly complete it Monday. It is a pre-test just to see initial understanding of the words before we learn them formally.

"Sound Devices" packets were due today. First hour attended the SPUD Closing Assembly; all other hours did a mini review session over the attached PowerPoint (see new terms and excerpts from "The Raven" at the end of the slideshow). Tuesday-Thursday is CogAT testing; there will be no make ups. This does not affect grades in my class. There will be no assignments out of class this week. ![]()
Wednesday students received a packet over Sound Devices, the pages of which will be attached below. After feedback from Wednesday, the first three poems (to which #'s 1-9 pertain) are the only three I will require to be completed. Students must also pick three poems to emulate/write their own example. Completing more than three poems and additional questions will yield extra credit! I fully encourage everyone to take advantage of that. Due to SPUD Week interruptions (fun assemblies that I do not want to penalize my students for attending!), this packet won't be due until Monday. It's our last big poetry assignment. ![]()

Today, first hour went to an assembly. 2nd-6th hours turned in their Sonnet packets and worked on an "Irony Scavenger Hunt" assignment. This will be due on Thursday. First hour does not need to do this assignment, but needs to turn in their sonnet work on the 20th. ![]()

Attached is the remainder of the packet for Shakespeare's "Sonnet 18." We will be working on this packet for three days, as the last couple of pages require the creation of a sonnet and a graphing of it, or charting of the syllables to fit the meter. I will update this post with what we get to each day as it comes. Tuesday: We completed the first quatrain analysis as a group. Wednesday: Students completed the next two quatrains and final couplet analyses on their own (with the option to collaborate with partners). Thursday: Students completed a theme statement, not using the "frame statement" box, and began graphing "Sonnet 18" as well as creating their own Shakespearean sonnets. Students were warned not to Google a sonnet and "borrow" it, as it would result in a 0 (it happened last year, so I am vigilant about it). Students did not have to write the analytical paragraph (we may return to it later, though). Friday: Students will continue crafting their own sonnets, which are tentatively due upon return to class Tuesday (with the rest of the packet).

Today, students had a bit more than the first half of class to finish Friday's packet over "The Witch" and turn it in. Then, we completed a survey for OU. Lastly, students received a packet over Shakespeare's "Sonnet 18." We only began page one, which is a pre-reading/anticipation activity. We will resume with the rest tomorrow. Only page one is attached below, with the remainder to follow in a post for tomorrow's work. ![]()
Today, I collected the work from Wednesday and Thursday first thing. I am enforcing late policies (10% off per day late), and a paper is late if I do not receive it by the time I formally collect the assignment (unless a student was absent; absent students get a day per each day absent to make up work). It will be marked instantly as missing (a zero) until I do receive it. I discussed important concepts from "The Road Not Taken" briefly before we moved on to our next activity. "The Witch" is the poem we moved on to, and the corresponding analysis pages (along with the poem) will be attached below. This packet will be due in class on Monday. Students will have the first half of class to complete it, in addition to today's class period. ![]()

Today, we are on Advisory schedule. Students need to finish yesterday's assignment in a thorough way. It will be due tomorrow/Friday at the start of class, and it will be worth 100 points as a Daily Work grade. Please see attached for the instructions I put on the overhead today, and please see yesterday's post for the materials. ![]()
Today, we began looking at Pre-AP Strategies for exploring a poem after receiving additional definitions of literary terms and tone/tone words. The poem we looked at today was "The Road Not Taken" by Robert Frost, and we looked at an about the author portion in our textbook that corresponded to the poem. All attachments will be below, and many will be in separate files. We will continue working on this in class tomorrow, and we will ultimately explore responses and contradictions in the poems when we are done. This will be turned in for a grade. The due date will be determined by how far students get on the assignment in class on Thursday. Tone Words and Tone vs. Mood ![]()

Welcome back everyone! Today we copied down a simple, preliminary list of poetry terms. There will be additional terms, but I will have them on handouts. These terms are free to use on quizzes over poetry. ![]()
