Today, all sections had the opportunity to finish reading "The Cask of Amontillado" individually if they were unable to yesterday. 3rd-6th hours had the opportunity to read non-fiction selections about Poe's death and final days on page 222 in the textbook if they had already completed the short story.
After reading, a whole class discussion took place, focusing on clarifying any questions about the selections and emphasizing the importance of irony in Montresor's narration and dialogue. We also covered, as a class, the reading questions on page 219.
Toward the end of the hour, each student received a Character Analysis Chart to fill out for both Montresor and Fortunado. The third part of the chart for Montresor's analysis was optional (it is difficult for certain adjectives to find something that Fortunado said about him to support such characterization). This chart is to be completed in class on Friday the 26th and is DUE no later than the end of the hour unless students were absent, in which case it may be turned in on Monday. This chart will help us expand into our literary analysis essays, and it should also help clarify the concept of evidence and commentary in paragraphs.
