Today, students finished reading "The Lady, or the Tiger?" in the textbook and also finished taking notes over the story. Please see the resources tab for a copy of the story. Upon completing their notes, they answered (individually) the questions on page 367 in COMPLETE SENTENCES. These will be due tomorrow, but students had sufficient time to complete them in class and will get a few minutes to finish up tomorrow. The questions are as follows:
1. How are people punished or rewarded under the king's system of justice?
2. Why is the young man put on trial in the king's arena?
3. What does the princess learn?
4. Why does the young man decide to open the door on the right?
5. How would you describe the CHARACTER of the king and the way he rules his people? Do you think the narrator believes he is a good leader? Explain your answer.
6. CHARACTERIZE the princess. In what ways is she similar to her father? What kind of love does she feel for the young man?
7. When the narrator says of the king's system of justice, "Its perfect fairness is obvious," he is using VERBAL IRONY--saying one thing but meaning something completely different. Explain what the narrator is implying in this line. Then, find another example of verbal irony in the story.
8. What do you think is behind the door the young man opens: the lady or the tiger? Consider these factors, and support your answer with evidence:

8. What do you think is behind the door the young man opens: the lady or the tiger? Consider these factors, and support your answer with evidence:
- the CHARACTER of the princess
- the princess's MOTIVATION for directing the young man to the lady or the tiger
- clues in the narrator's description of the princess's thoughts and behavior
