Today, all sections continued work on their Character Analysis Charts. Many finished these and were able to turn them in. Those that did not were not required to finish them for homework, but informed that the assignment would be due by the end of class Monday. Those who turned in their Charts yesterday got them back for editing if there were mistakes in formatting and commentary.
Attached below is a PowerPoint that all sections viewed; its purpose was to introduce the potential prompts/questions for our upcoming Literary Analysis Essay over "The Cask of Amontillado" and to remind students of the importance of explaining their evidence, as well as how to format quotations and parenthetical citation.
For the remainder of class (after the Character Analysis Charts were completed), students chose a prompt, and determined additional defining characteristics of either Montresor or Fortunado. Then, they searched through the textbook to find passages, quotes, etc. to support those characteristics and recorded them in MLA format. Ultimately, these bits of evidence and associated commentary will be used in their essay writing. Today was a great opportunity to gather evidence in advance of next week's writing opportunities; that way, there is less last-minute textbook searching, and more writing and formatting.
On Monday, students will receive a packet with all the information they will need to complete this upcoming essay--checklists, a rubric, due dates, resources, etc.
